Our Small group has been raising funds to help support Herridge Technical School (HTS), Burundi for 10 years now. During that time many school buildings have been added, and trees planted in the grounds are now yielding avocados, which are a useful part of the pupils’ diet. Children at the school have thrived, and the majority of those leaving the school have got jobs. This success of HTS continues to be a valued contribution to the people of this part of Burundi.
Unfortunately, since 2015 there has been political unrest in Burundi, and HTS has to be guarded continuously because of civil disputes. Inflation in the country is high, and food and equipment cost much more than they did in earlier years. The pupils have always been given meals, as the school is a long walk from many of their homes, but matters are so difficult now that staff members also have to be given food in lieu of pay.
The School is extremely grateful to all at St Mary’s and Sale West who have generously supported HTS. It is a great blessing that the school is now one of our church’s mission partners.
We are now continuing our support through the organisation of an Afternoon Tea at Wendy Davis’s house (85 Harboro Road) on July 28th at 3:00 pm. Tickets are £8 and will be available at church. We hope to see you there.
